On Tuesday, June 9, 2026, the European Parliament in Brussels hosted this year’s edition of Romanian Digital Day, a landmark event dedicated to the technological future and digital transformation of the Romanian economy. The Digital Innovation Zone (DIZ) team was present to bring the digitalization needs and innovation potential of Romania’s North-East region to the European agenda.
The initiative was organized by Victor Negrescu, Vice-President of the European Parliament, and co-organized by a strong network of key players from the national ecosystem: ANIS Romania, Transilvania IT Cluster, IMM Romania, The European Digital Innovation Hub in Transilvania RoboHub, and Innovation Labs Romania – National University of Science and Technology POLITEHNICA Bucharest.
EDIHs: Central pillars in Romania’s digital transformation
Our colleague, Lidia Mocanu, Strategy Director at Digital Innovation Zone, was one of the event’s keynote speakers, emphasizing the crucial role of European Digital Innovation Hubs (EDIHs) in the Romanian innovation and digitalization ecosystem.
During the panel discussions, participants highlighted how EDIHs serve as a direct engine of support for SMEs and public sector organizations. The integrated services offered by these hubs – ranging from digital maturity assessments and employee upskilling to specialized consultancy for accessing funding and the essential concept of “Test Before Invest” in advanced technologies – are vital for removing barriers to modernization.
Concrete needs and opportunities for the North-East region
The discussions in Brussels reflected the reality on the ground: in Romania’s North-East region, companies and institutions are showing a rapidly growing interest in adopting Artificial Intelligence, automation, cybersecurity, and data-driven solutions.
However, for this twin digital and green transition to succeed, local entrepreneurs and leaders require an integrated support framework. Facilitating access to European funding, combined with interregional collaboration opportunities at the EU level, is key to boosting the competitiveness of our regional economy.
